Biography

Paris welcomed Jeanne Marie-Laurent on 1 September 1877, and the city’s footlights soon became her playground. Over four decades she slipped effortlessly from silent serials to early talkies, bewitching audiences as the cunning vamp in Louis Feuillade’s Les Vampires (1915), then moving them to tears in the 1925 drama Mother. A glittering turn among the chorus of Paris’ Girls (1929) sealed her reputation as the girl who could embody both sin and sorrow. She spent her last quiet years in Lagny-sur-Marne, where she died on 7 April 1964, leaving the screen a little dimmer.
