Biography

Jenny Dolly, one half of the iconic Dolly Sisters, first captivated audiences when her talent, alongside identical twin Rosie, caught the eye of the legendary Flo Ziegfeld. Plucked from the humble vaudeville circuit, they secured their place in his 1911 Follies. With their dark olive complexions and diminutive statures, they radiated an intriguing, exotic mystique, a carefully crafted illusion far from their true origins. Hailing from Hungary as Jancsi and Roszica, they had immigrated to the vibrant Lower East Side of New York, swiftly Americanizing their names. Ziegfeld catapulted their act to Broadway stardom, and soon both sisters were lavished with attention, luxury, and proposals from an incessant parade of wealthy admirers and eager Stage Door Johnnies. Jenny, the more audacious twin, possessed a glittering obsession with diamonds. Her film career included two silent features, in 1915 and 1918, the latter co-starring Rosie. Their paths diverged as they journeyed to Europe; Jenny was drawn to the glittering allure of the roulette tables, while Rosie chose a different path, returning to Hungary to work in an orphanage. Their reunion in Paris sparked a resurgence, bringing another wave of immense success as they famously debuted the Charleston at the Casino de Paris. This renewed triumph brought a fresh influx of affluent suitors. Adorned in a cascade of diamonds, Jenny captivated European high society, finding herself courted by luminaries such as the Prince of Wales and King Christian of Denmark. Their dazzling escapades continued across the continent, culminating in a shared marquee with Maurice Chevalier at the legendary Moulin Rouge. Rosie eventually settled down, marrying a prosperous Chicago businessman. Jenny, however, embarked on a tumultuous affair with aviator Max Constant. Amidst one of their recurrent estrangements, Jenny briefly became involved with British department store mogul Gordon Selfridge, who presented her with a staggering proposal of marriage, complete with a lavish financial incentive. Caught between her passionate feelings for Max and the allure of a life of unparalleled luxury, she chose one final, fateful weekend with her aviator lover. This clandestine rendezvous proved almost deadly when they were involved in a catastrophic car accident near Bordeaux. Jenny sustained critical injuries, leaving her severely disfigured, and she spent months in recovery at the American Hospital in Paris. Following her stabilization, Selfridge spared no expense, commissioning the world's foremost plastic surgeons to reconstruct her beauty, yet their efforts ultimately proved futile. Ultimately, her sister and brother-in-law facilitated her return to the U.S., where she lingered, a shadow of her former self, both mentally and physically shattered. Tragically, her life ended in suicide, as she fashioned a noose from the drapes of her Hollywood apartment and took her own life.
