Biography
Clearcreek, Montana, coughed up its first cold morning of September 1880 and, along with it, Joe Rickson—an infant who’d trade frontier silence for flickering celluloid. By 1924 he was spurring horses through Rough Ridin’, a year later he stalked the wilderness as Baree, Son of Kazan, and in 1929 he wandered straight into The Drifter, letting the camera read every line life had etched on his face. The reels stopped turning for him on 8 January 1958, when Los Angeles County closed its curtains on the cowboy who rode out of Montana and into the flickers.
