Biography
A daughter of Kaiserslautern’s narrow cobblestone streets, Johanna Terwin first drew breath on 18 March 1884. Within three decades she had become the electric focus of German silent screens—her Anna in Pique Dame (1918) still haunts the playing cards she clutched, while Sodoms Ende (1913) let her embody the twilight of a decadent empire. Talkies later lured her to an Alpine set, where Harvest (1936) captured her weather-lined grace. Off-camera she shared the spotlight with legendary actor Alexander Moissi as his wife. After half a lifetime of curtain calls, she took her final bow in Zurich on 4 January 1962.
