Biography
A native son of Manhattan, John Slavin first drew breath in 1869 amid the clatter of Broadway horse-cars and gas-lit marquees. By twenty-five he had already stepped before the camera, immortalizing his vaudeville double-act in the brisk one-reeler Walton and Slavin No. 3 (1894). Two decades later he unlocked nationwide laughter as the harried lead of A Bunch of Keys (1915), and during the Great War’s final year he rallied audiences with the rousing melodrama For Freedom (1918). Slavin’s final curtain fell in the city that had always been his stage, on 27 August 1940.
