Biography
On the last day of March 1885, Cologne’s Rhine-scented air welcomed Josef Coenen into the world. Within a few restless years he had traded the cathedral city’s cobblestones for the flicker of early film stock, conjuring three surreal milestones of German silent cinema: the one-eyed gentlemen’s society of 1917, the gold-haired Loo and her mischief two years later, and—most fantastical of all—the elusive Isle of the Fortunate, all released in the breathless aftermath of war.
