Biography
A century ago, when Barcelona’s film stock was still crackling with nitrate fire, Josep Balaguer stepped in front of the camera for Mefisto (1917), trading the city’s gas-lit shadows for a devil’s mask. That same year he returned—this time to die stylishly—in El beso de la muerte. Forty autumns later, the industry had swapped silent gestures for Technicolor laughter, and Balaguer was still there, tipping his hat to the younger cast of El genio alegre in 1957, living proof that a performer could outrun both time and talkies.
