Biography
Port Huron, Michigan, greeted Joseph Belmont with August sunshine on the 18th of 1874, and from that lakeside town he set off to conjure flickering dreams. In front of the camera he breathed life into silents—sparring with social bias in 1922’s Prejudice, trading comic blows in The Balance, and wringing laughs from a scullery in The Hired Girl—both shorts stamped 1915. Behind the lens he shaped stories as director, guiding early cinema’s glow until the projector finally dimmed. On 16 May 1939, California’s golden coast closed his curtain.
