Biography

Omaha, Nebraska, greeted the arrival of Joseph Henabery on 15 January 1888, and from that prairie horizon he marched straight into the flickering dawn of Hollywood. A chameleon of the silent era, Henabery stepped in front of the camera and then slipped behind it, helping steer epoch-making canvases such as *The Birth of a Nation* (1915), the colossal *Intolerance* (1916), and the breezy caper *His Majesty, the American* (1919). Off-screen, two marriages—to Lillian Nolan first, later to Maceal Nolan—framed his private life. More than eight decades after his Nebraska beginnings, the final reel rolled on 18 February 1976 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, closing the career of a man who helped mold cinema’s earliest language.
