Biography
Philadelphia, 1878: a city of gaslight and cobblestones welcomed Joseph Smith into the world. By 1910 he had traded the clatter of trolleys for the hiss of carbon-arc lamps, stepping before the camera in “The Little Doctor of the Foothills” and the brisk farce “Method in His Madness.” Five years later he slipped into Gallic disguises for “The Apaches of Paris,” sealing his place in nickelodeon flicker-fame. Off-screen, Smith’s leading lady was Frances Demorest—his wife and lifelong scene partner. The final curtain fell on 22 December 1932 in New York City, the lights of Broadway dimming as the former “little doctor” exited Manhattan’s stage forever.
