Clinton, New Jersey, greeted Kate Jepson’s first cry on 7 July 1860, and by the time flickering nickelodeons began to charm the country she had stepped before the camera, gifting life to The Education of Mr. Pipp (1914), the campus romp Just Out of College (1915), and the domestic storm of The Turmoil (1916).
