Biography
A winter baby, Katherine La Salle drew her first breath on 9 February 1892 along the icy shores of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. By twenty-one she had stepped before the camera, animating the silent reels of Checkers (1913). Within months she lit up two 1914 releases—The Banker's Daughter and Northern Lights—then slipped away from the spotlight as quietly as she had arrived. Off-screen, she wed Samuel Emlen Carpenter, sharing the next seven decades with him. Ninety-six springs later, on 10 April 1988, she closed her eyes for good in Rhinebeck, New York.
