Biography

Born under the twin spires of Kolozsvár on 11 June 1892, Katinka Papp stepped straight from school-yard skits into the flicker of the newborn Hungarian cinema. Within two years she had galloped across the Great Plain as the fearless rider in Sárga csikó (1914), melted chalk-dust hearts as the idealistic teacher in A tanítónö (1917), and traded banter with a crusty old hussar in A vén bakancsos és fia, a huszár (1918). Off-screen she shared her life—and a crowded practice of medical tomes—with Dr. Gyula Ungár. Six decades later, on 7 August 1977, the curtain closed for the last time in Budapest, the city that had long since adopted her as its own.
