Biography

February 5, 1889, Maria-Theresiopel—today the Serbian city of Subotica—welcomed Kató Berky into the world. Within a few vibrant years she had stepped onto the silent-film sets of 1915, lending her presence to A szökött katona, A paradicsom, and Leányfurfang, three pictures that flickered across Austro-Hungarian screens while Europe reeled from war. Off-camera she shared her life with fellow performer Alajos Mészáros. Six decades after her first breath, on July 1, 1961, her story closed in Budapest, but the light she left on celluloid still glimmers.
