Biography

Born in France in 1888, Laurent Morléas spent the silent era slipping between spotlight and shadow: orchestrating mayhem behind the camera for Louis Feuillade’s crime epics Les Vampires (1915) and Fantômas: The Mysterious Finger Print (1914), then stepping in front of it to breathe life into the swaggering uniforms of Napoléon’s court in Madame Sans-Gêne (1925). The war years kept him busy shuttling sets, budgets, and actors, but the cameras finally stopped in 1942 when Morléas closed his last reel on French soil.
