Biography
On a winter day in 1867, Courtland, Mississippi, welcomed Lawrence B. McGill into the world—22 February to be exact. Behind the camera and sometimes in front of it, he steered silent-era audiences through America (1914), wrangled the moral maze of The First Law (1918), and followed the free-spirited The Girl from Bohemia that same year. Off-screen, he shared his life with actress Gertrude Shipman. Sixty-one years and a day after his first breath, he drew his last, quietly, in Waldo, Florida.
