Biography

Bristol welcomed Lawson Butt on 4 March 1880, and from that riverside city he sailed onto silent-era screens—towering, baritone, impossible to overlook. Between the flicker of hand-cranked cameras and the first whisper of talkies, he shaped performances in Dante’s Inferno (1924), painted swagger into The Beloved Rogue (1927), and steered the shadows of Afterwards (1928), acting when needed, directing when the story demanded. Half a lifetime later, the Hampshire downs claimed him; he died there on 14 January 1956, leaving behind the echo of a voice once big enough to carry without microphones.
