Biography

"Lev Trotskiy, a prominent communist ideologue and a central figure in the Russian Revolutions of both 1905 and 1917, stood as a key leader alongside Vladimir Lenin. His tenure as commissar for foreign affairs saw him orchestrate the controversial Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany. Subsequently, he assumed command of the nascent Red Army during the tumultuous Russian Civil War, a period marked by the deaths of over a million White Army soldiers and Cossacks, carried out under Vladimir Lenin's explicit orders. Despite forcibly conscripting Russian peasants and workers into the Red Army, his military leadership proved less than stellar. This became starkly evident during the Russian invasion of Poland in the 1920s, which was decisively repulsed by Polish forces led by Marshal Józef Pilsudski, incurring very heavy Russian losses. Following Lenin's death in 1924, Trotsky became entangled in a bitter power struggle with his formidable adversary, Joseph Stalin. Stalin systematically dismantled Trotsky's influence, effectively sidelining him by 1929 and ultimately expelling him from Russia in 1936. The remainder of Trotsky's life was spent in restless exile, finding temporary refuge in Mexico at the home of the communist artist Diego Rivera. From this distant haven, he continued to write and preach revolution, until his voice was permanently silenced in 1940. That year, he was assassinated by Ramon Mercader, a Spanish communist dispatched by Stalin to carry out the killing."
