Biography
Perth, Scotland, greeted Lila Barclay’s first cry on 9 August 1884, and by her teens she had traded its granite streets for the gas-lit stages of London. Celluloid soon beckoned: in 1911 she strode into history as a fierce Katherine opposite Herbert Beerbohm Tree in the earliest screen version of Henry VIII; three years later she survived the lions of Rome in The Sign of the Cross; and in 1915 she lent aching nuance to The Sentimental Lady. After the cameras fell silent she slipped from public view, dying quietly in Watford, Hertfordshire, on 28 November 1965, leaving only the flicker of those first reels to prove she was ever there.
