Biography
Hot Springs, Arkansas, welcomed Lillian Cook on 16 May 1898, and by her late teens she had already traded the spa town’s vapors for the klieg lights of early Hollywood. Between 1915 and 1918 she slipped into three vastly different skins: the doomed courtesan of *Camille*, the wide-eyed sleuth of *The Submarine Eye*, and the dream-seeking Mytyl in 1918’s fantasy landmark *The Blue Bird*. The camera loved her quicksilver changeability, but time was stingy; on 14 March 1918, a few weeks before *The Blue Bird* reached theaters, the 19-year-old died quietly in New York City, closing a career that had barely flickered to life.
