Biography
San Francisco lights first blinked on for Linda Arvidson 12 July 1884. By twenty-four she had stepped in front of Biograph’s crank cameras, lending her copper-bright hair and quicksilver reactions to the one-reeler The Adventures of Dollie (1908). Four more summers passed before she incarnated Hawthorne’s haunted Hester in The Scarlet Letter (1913) and confronted medieval morality in Everyman (1913). Between takes she traded vows with the set’s visionary director, D. W. Griffith, turning their marriage into the industry’s earliest power couple. When the final curtain fell, it rose again on Manhattan; she died there 26 July 1949, leaving behind a notebook of memories and the flickering shadows that still bear her name.
