Biography
Whitman County, Washington, greeted the dawn of 19 January 1897 with the arrival of Lorraine Huling, a girl who would grow up to animate the silent screen. Within only a few breathless seasons she tackled Civil War memory in *Fifty Years After Appomattox* (1915), stormed through the apocalyptic fantasy *The Fall of a Nation* (1916), and gave voice to Shakespeare’s storm-tossed monarch in *King Lear* (1916). Off-camera she took Richard Field Maynard as her husband. The final curtain fell on 15 November 1971 in Fairfield, Connecticut, closing a life bookended by coasts and framed by flickering images.
