Biography

June’s warmth filled St. Augustine, Florida, on 10 June 1896, the day Louella Maxam first opened her eyes. By twenty-one she was already flickering across nickelodeon screens, stealing scenes in *Because of a Woman* (1917). A year later she slipped into *The Mantle of Charity* (1918), and in 1921 she rode high with the action-packed western *The Raiders*. Off-camera she took William Brunton as her husband, sharing life beyond the klieg lights. Fifty-four years after her Florida sunrise, the California sun set on her story; she died quietly in Burbank on 3 September 1970.
