Biography
Born among the rolling hills of Oneida, New York, on 26 May 1879, Louis Leon Hall grew up to trade small-town quiet for the flicker of early silent film. Within a single year he slipped into three very different skins: the tormented soul of *The Man of Shame* (1915), the conscience-wracked lead of *Man and Morality* (1916), and the mystery-laden protagonist of *The Man Inside* (1916). Between takes he sharpened his pen, earning credit as both actor and writer while the cameras still cranked by hand. Off-screen, his heart found two leading ladies—first Ethel Frances Roberts, later actress Ann Shoemaker. The final curtain fell for Hall on 17 April 1930, in Houlton, Maine, where the pine-scented air carried the last breath of a man who once helped shape the grammar of cinema.
