Biography
Born in the hill-ringed hamlet of Colrain, Massachusetts, on 27 November 1886, Louise Bates traded small-town quiet for the flicker of silent reels. She stepped before the camera for Inspiration (1915), gave soul to Silas Marner (1916), and burned up the screen in The Easiest Way (1917). Off-set, she shared her life with two husbands—actor-director Edmund Mortimer and, later, Harris Gordon—while the movies learned to speak and she slipped into legend. She closed her final scene in Los Angeles on 11 June 1972, leaving behind the glow of a vanished era.
