Biography

Carthage, New York, welcomed Lucille Hammill in 1902, and before she had blown out twelve candles she was already facing cameras. Between 1915 and 1917 she slipped into three very different worlds—first the war-rattled streets of *The Battle Cry of Peace*, then the charity-driven chaos of *Philanthropic Tommy*, and finally the moral crucible of *The Judgment House*. Each role added another layer to a career that flared quickly and faded almost as fast. On 17 June 1939 the lights went down for good in Manhattan; the city that had launched her took her back, leaving only the flicker of those early silent frames to speak for her.
