Biography
A daughter of the Kansas plains, Lucy Payton first drew breath on 12 October 1877. Within a few restless years she had traded prairie winds for klieg lights, spinning stories both on paper and on celluloid. Between 1915 and 1916 she slipped behind the veil of three now-cult silents—The Lure of the Mask, The Secretary of Frivolous Affairs, and Where Are My Children?—writing and performing tales that flickered across nickelodeon screens. Off-set she claimed a real-life leading man, Claude Payton, whose surname she kept long after the credits rolled. Her final curtain fell on 15 January 1969 in Louisiana, Missouri, but the flicker of her masked lures and frivolous affairs still haunts the archives.
