Biography

Naples, 1880s: a boy named Luigi Mele learns the city’s pulse—its streetlight shadows, its opera-house crescendos—then carries both rhythms into the newborn Italian cinema. By 1913 he steps in front of the crank camera as Renzo in The Betrothed, giving Manzoni’s lovers a fresh, flickering breath. A year later he swaps cassock for megaphone, marshaling Cossack extras across the back-lot steppes of Zirka and conjuring court intrigue for La regina Mezurka—two 1914 releases that send Neapolitan moviegoers cheering through the Galleria. Three films, three surges of light across a still-blank screen; then the projector stops. Mele dies in 1921, twenty-four brief reels after his first close-up, leaving the Bay of Naples glittering with stories it will keep retelling every time the lights go down.
