Biography
A midwinter baby in 1852, Luke J. Loring first drew breath somewhere amid the restless sprawl of the United States. By the time flickering images found their way onto nickelodeon screens, he had slipped into the skin of outlaws and gentlemen alike, most recognizably as the gambler seeking absolution in the 1914 one-reeler *Forgiven; or, the Jack of Diamonds*. Weeks after the picture’s release, on a spring dawn the following 4 May, Loring’s own final curtain fell in New York City, the same metropolis that had become cinema’s noisy new capital.
