Biography
Before the talkies roared in, Madeleine Grandjean flickered across mute screens like a match struck in a dark room. In 1913 she walked the edge of doom in *The Vial of Wrath*, returned the following year to outwit death itself in *Trompe-la-Mort*, and by 1917 had become *La grande vedette*—the blazing star her country’s audiences swore they could almost hear sing.
