Biography
A July heatwave welcomed Madeleine Guitty into the world on the 5th of 1870 in Corbeil, a riverside manufacturing town that would later be folded into Greater Paris. By the time talkies arrived she had already become a silver-screen grande dame, stealing scenes as the cheeky concierge in Zou Zou (1934), the unflappable laundress-turned-duchess in Madame Sans-Gêne (1925), and the scandalized aunt in Pas sur la bouche (1931). Paris claimed her back on 12 April 1936, closing the curtain on a 65-year performance that began in a candle-lit theatre and flickered into cinema history.
