Biography
Iowa welcomed Mae Prestell on 4 July 1878, and by the time the cameras rolled she had already traded prairie quiet for the crackle of klieg lights. Between 1915 and 1928 she slipped into three sharply different skins: the steadfast title role in Beulah, the comic spark of The Smoke Eaters, and the bargaining heart of The Girl He Didn’t Buy. Los Angeles, the city that finally knew her by name, became her last stage when she died there on 29 April 1952.
