Biography

Los Angeles welcomed Marguerite Nichols on 3 August 1892, and the city kept her close for all forty-eight of her years. Within months of her 1915 screen debut she sprinted through three 1916 releases—Dust, The Torch Bearer, and The Strength of Donald McKenzie—each one a one-reel sprint that proved she could flicker with mischief or ache with heartbreak in the space of a few hundred feet of nitrate. Off-set she traded lines for laughter with comedy titan Hal Roach; their marriage fused two pioneering spirits who were helping turn a flicker into an industry. She left the stage quietly on 17 March 1941, dying where she was born, her footprints still fresh in the still-wet cement of Hollywood’s first sidewalks.
