Biography
Born on a winter’s day in 1840s-rural Ászár—today swallowed by Kisbér—Mari Jászai stepped onto the boards that would become her kingdom. In 1915 the camera finally found her: she thundered through Bánk bán and The Undesirable, proving that even the silver screen could not dim the fire she had perfected on stage. Off-stage, she shared her life with writer Vidor Kassai. After 76 vivid years she took her final bow in Budapest on 5 October 1926, leaving Hungarian theatre with a voice it still echoes.
