Biography

Long before the camera learned to whisper, Maria Caserini was already speaking with her whole body on the gas-lit stages of Italy. In 1906 she stepped before the crude hand-cranked lenses of Cines in Rome and became Desdemona in what survives today as cinema’s earliest Othello, shot by the man who shared both her surname and her future, Mario Caserini. Two years later she swapped velvet gowns for doublet and hose, playing Romeo to a luminous Juliet in 1908’s Romeo e Giulietta, then stalked the battlements of Scotland as Lady Macbeth—each frame still tethered to Mario’s steady directorial hand. Between these Shakespearean forays she cranked out thirteen more shorts before 1909’s sun had set. The new decade found her unstoppable: from 1910 to 1927 she lived in front of the camera, racking up sixty-five roles, many under Mario’s guidance, none more magnetic than her poison-bright Lucrezia Borgia, the part that finally burned her name into the public’s imagination. When talkies arrived she simply turned on her heel, walked back into the theater, and let the curtain fall behind her.
