Biography
Before microphones and close-ups, Maria Gandini conjured whole worlds in flickering silence. In 1912 she strode across the marble of On the Steps of the Throne, and the next year she book-ended history with twin 1913 triumphs—the plague-haunted epic The Betrothed and the barracks drama The Two Sergeants—etching her name into the birth-year of Italian cinema.
