Biography
Rome, 24 December 1889: Mario Bonnard entered the world in the shadow of the Colosseum and would spend his life projecting moving shadows of his own. First he faced the camera as an actor, then stepped behind it to orchestrate stories that spanned silent epics and early talkies. Audiences still chase the vanished treaty of Il trattato scomparso (1933), feel the weight of Manzoni’s lovers in I promessi sposi (1922), and wince at the five-nil rout of Cinque a zero (1932). After 75 years of framing Roman light, he returned it to the city he never left, dying there on 22 March 1965.
