In the flicker of early Italian cinema, Mario Mariani stepped briefly but unmistakably into the light: first as the emperor whose triumph paraded across screens in 1913, then as the sky-borne pirate of *Filibus* in 1915, and finally amid the snow-draped drama of *La capanna dello zio Tom* in 1918.
