Biography
Mary Gish entered the world on 16 September 1876 somewhere in the United States, and before the silent era dimmed she had already stepped in front of the camera, leaving flickering traces in Two Daughters of Eve (1912), Letters Entangled (1915), and D. W. Griffith’s wartime epic Hearts of the World (1918). Off-screen she took the name of James Leigh de Guiche, wedding the man whose surname sounded like a sigh. Exactly seventy-two circuits of the sun after her first breath, she drew her last in New York City, closing the book on 16 September 1948.
