Biography
Mathaleen Aamold—born 23 October 1894 amid the drizzle of Portland, Oregon—stepped before the camera early enough to leave ghost-images of a vanished world. In 1914 she became “The Little Gray Lady,” and within a year twice more faced the crank-and-rattle of silent film: first as the tormented heir of The Crest of Von Endheim, then as the reckless heart of The Wayward Son. Off-screen she took the hand of fellow player Howard Torgler in marriage. Fifty-eight winters later, in January 1977, the curtains closed on her final scene, this time in the quiet of Washington State.
