Biography

Long before the Revolution rewrote Russian life, Mikhail Tamarov slipped through the silent screen’s first flickers: in 1912 he stepped into the mournful glow of *The Departure of the Great Old Man*, a year later lent his presence to the perfume-laden melancholy of *How Lovely, How Fresh Were the Roses*, and in 1914 faced the thunderous trains and hearts of *Anna Karenina*. Three films, three quick turns in the birth-light of cinema—then darkness.
