Before the talkies roared in, Morton flickered across early screens like a half-remembered dream: first baiting the Devil in 1914’s The Temptations of Satan, then slipping through the shadows of Der Mitternachtsassessor and Die fremde Frau, both released in the watershed year of 1919.
