Biography
Virginia, 1879: a baby girl drew her first breath long before microphones or multiplexes, yet she would grow up to speak fluently in the new tongue of moving pictures. Under the name Mrs. Lawrence Marston she stepped before the camera while the medium itself was still learning to stand, animating the gaunt heroine of A Militant Suffragette in 1912, surrendering to the flicker of Moths the following year, and cloaking herself in menace for 1914’s The Woman in Black. Off-screen she shared life—and a surname—with Lawrence Marston, the actor-director who became her husband. Her final scene unspooled on 9 July 1934 in Manhattan, the island that had always loved a good story.
