Biography
Before the talkies, before the studio star-system calcified, two reels of flickering nitrate still whisper the name Wellington Playter. In 1915 she surfaced as the coral-kissed heroine of William Nigh’s one-reel fable Coral, a picture that shipped audiences to an undersea dreamscape when most of Manhattan had never seen a snorkel. Twelve months later she traded fins for flapper feathers, gliding through Their Social Smash (1916) as a bright young thing whose dinner party detonates into champagne-splattered chaos. Then—like a match struck against the night—she vanished, leaving only those two titles to prove that, once, Mrs. Wellington Playter glowed on the silent screen.
