Biography
Octavia Boas slipped into the world on a snowy Christmas Eve, 1887, in a Manhattan brownstone that smelled of pine and coal smoke. By seventeen she had traded her father’s tailor shop for greasepaint, treading East Coast boards under gaslight before the flicker of movies lured her west. In 1914 she stepped in front of a crank camera for *The Path Forbidden*; the picture survived, her name did not. Dozens of one-reelers followed, each swallowed by the voracious new industry almost before the tint dried. After seven anonymous years she took one final bow in 1921’s *Footlights*, then walked off the lot without looking back. The rest of her days were spent cultivating roses in Southern California, her past tucked away like forgotten intertitles. Ninety-one autumns later, on an October morning in Hemet, she closed the book herself—quietly, naturally, out of the shuffle at last.
