Biography
Born under the twin steeples of Pápa on 24 October 1881, when the town still answered to the Habsburg crown, Ödön Réthely stepped onto the stage just as silent film began to speak to the world. Within a single year—1917—he stalked the smoky foundries of *A vasgyáros* and slipped into the hushed classrooms of *A tanítónö*, two Hungarian reels that still flicker in archives today. Three years later he crossed into the nascent Kingdom of Romania, adding his haunted gaze to the adventure serial *Din Grozaviile lumii*. The cameras eventually stopped rolling, but Réthely stayed in Transylvania, dying quietly in Cluj on 20 October 1951, three days short of his seventieth birthday.
