Biography
On 2 September 1884, Minnesota soil welcomed Olaf Skavlan, a future teller of stories in light and shadow. Before the camera he breathed life into Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in Romeo and Juliet (1916), rallied spirits in the wartime short Why America Will Win (1918), and steered early traffic through The Yellow Traffic (1914). Actor, director, and quiet architect of silent-era moments, Skavlan’s final curtain fell on 2 June 1949, in San Francisco, California.
