Biography
A Valentine’s Day baby—21 February 1889—Ormi Hawley first drew breath in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and by seventeen was already facing cameras, trading New England quiet for the flickering new world of motion pictures. Between 1911 and 1915 she sprinted across more than eighty one-reel adventures, slipping from the mountain courier’s loyal love in Michael Strogoff (1914) to the frantic mother of The Shanghaied Baby (1915) and the spirited heroine of Her Inspiration (1911). Off-screen, she took the name of Charles Fulcher; on-screen, she kept the luminous grin that made her one of Lubin’s most bankable leading ladies. When the lights dimmed for good on 3 June 1942, she was in Rome, New York, leaving behind a reel legacy that still crackles through cinema’s earliest sparks.
