Biography
Melbourne-born Paul Scardon arrived on American shores in 1905, trading an already-crowded Australian résumé of stage roles for the flicker of silent-era cameras. Early gigs at Majestic and Reliance sharpened his instincts before Vitagraph lured him aboard in 1914. In front of the lens he was serviceable; behind it he proved indispensable. Within months he stepped behind the camera, guiding—and later wedding—leading lady Betty Blythe through a string of popular one-reelers and features. Nine prolific Vitagraph years ended in 1919; by 1924 he had lensed his final picture, though he continued to crop up on-screen in character bits until 1949. A heart attack claimed him in Fontana, California, on 25 May 1954, closing the book on a 79-year life that spanned continents, studios, and the birth of Hollywood itself.
