Biography
A Thames-side boy who first drew breath in Southwark, 1886, Philip Renouf traded the clang of London’s docks for the hiss of carbon-arc lamps, stepping before the camera just long enough to immortalize himself as the swashbuckling Brigadier Gerard in the 1915 film of the same name. The role proved a single, bright comet across cinema’s dawn; after its brief blaze he slipped back into city anonymity, living out his last decades in quiet Barnes. On 11 July 1934 the curtain fell for good, leaving only that one celluloid adventure to speak for him.
